How Virtual Reality Provides A Space For Healing And Closure For Veterans

Submitted by Jessica Benson, VP of Market Development at MyndVR

MyndVR is proud to be an Allied Partner with the We Honor Veterans (WHV) program; with our partnership, we will offer hospice and palliative providers opportunities to see the healing and closure virtual reality can bring to Veterans at the End of Life.

MyndVR’s mission is to improve the quality of life for older adults, Veterans, and those that care for them, by providing outcome-based Virtual Reality Therapy on a global scale. The company offers best-in-class, all-in-one VR headsets and a carefully curated catalog of immersive content to reconnect older adults (aged 65+) with core experiences.  Such as Travel, Nature, Animals, Arts & Music, Learning, and Adventure – elements of vibrant life that their health and living circumstances may no longer allow them to enjoy.

Some NHPCO, We Honor Veterans partners are already enjoying the MyndVR system.   VITAS use-case with MyndVR, MJHS, Stein Hospice, Wyandot Hospice, and Star Valley Hospice are just a few that are already offering virtual reality experiences to their honor ceremony. Virtual reality provides a way for Veterans to travel to Washington, DC, to see their War memorials that were built to honor their service.  All of our VR experiences are mirrored on the control tablet so everyone can see what the Veteran is viewing.

Over the past 20 years, virtual reality therapy (VRT) research has continued to expand. VRT treats stress, pain, anxiety, isolation, phobias, and other physical, mental, and cognitive issues. MyndVR has established a national coalition of top VR researchers and university partners to study VR treatment of age-related problems, intending to provide prescriptive VRT via private pay and reimbursable government health plans. In 2021, MyndVR launched a significant trial on VR and aging in collaboration with Stanford University. To learn more about virtual reality’s current research space, learn more on our website here.

We Honor Veterans and MyndVR seek hospice organizations to join us in a study surrounding virtual reality and Veterans on hospice. If your organization is interested in joining our study on VR, please email veterans@nhpco.org, and we will connect you with our virtual reality research team.
