The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) is honored to recognize Dr. Scott Shreve’s exceptional leadership and significant partnership with NHPCO with the 2024 We Honor Veterans Leadership Award.
After 20 years of leadership, Dr. Scott Shreve has stepped down from his role as the National Director of the Hospice and Palliative Care Program for the Department of Veterans Affairs. In this role, Dr. Shreve was responsible for all policy, program development, staff education, and quality assurance for palliative and hospice care provided or purchased for Veterans enrolled in VA health care. As National Director, Dr. Shreve led the implementation and oversight of the Comprehensive End-of-Life Care Initiative from 2009 to 2012 to change the culture of care for Veterans with serious illness and to ensure reliable access to quality palliative care. In addition, while serving as National Director, Dr. Shreve also devoted half of his time to clinical care of Veteran patients as Medical Director and Teaching Attending at a 17-bed unit at the Lebanon VA Medical Center.
Dr. Shreve has provided VA oversight and guidance for NHPCO’s We Honor Veterans (WHV) program since its inception. Under his leadership, WHV has flourished to include over 2,700 community hospice partners actively committed to improving their capacity to identify and support Veterans and their family members at end of life. Dr. Shreve’s leadership of WHV is invaluable and irreplaceable. Dr. Shreve remains a committed supporter of We Honor Veterans, remarking “Our efforts and desire to improve end-of-life care for Veterans and their families is at the core of this program and I wish it much success going forward.”
NHPCO is deeply grateful for the enduring collaboration with Dr. Shreve and looks forward to continuing to expand support for Veterans with serious and life-limiting illness through the National Alliance for Care at Home.
