NHPCO’s We Honor Veterans Welcomes Extendicare as Their Pioneer Post-Acute Community Partner

For Immediate Release:
February 11, 2014

Partnership to Enhance Care that Extendicare Provides to Veterans

(Alexandria, Va) –We Honor Veterans, an innovative program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, is helping thousands of professionals across America enhance their skills to meet the needs of veterans. NHPCO is pleased to welcome Extendicare to the We Honor Veterans program as our pioneer post-acute community partner.

Extendicare is one of North America’s largest long-term care providers with 245 senior care centers and the capacity to care for approximately 27,000 residents.

As a community partner, Extendicare will have access to the innovative WHV resources and training that will help the organization better serve Veterans throughout the country.  As a We Honor Veterans community partner, Extendicare will focus on respectful inquiry, compassionate listening and grateful acknowledgment in serving the post-acute healthcare needs of veterans.

“It surprises many people to learn that there are over 21 million veterans living in America today. These men and women often carry experiences from their military service that present unique healthcare challenges,” said J. Donald Schumacher, NHPCO President and CEO.

Within the WHV program, there are four levels of distinction that each Extendicare center can earn based on its involvement with Veteran education and its interaction with the Veterans and their family members that they are caring for. The goal of these levels is to ensure the very best care is being provided to those who have served our country.

“Through our work with We Honor Veterans we strive to enhance the quality care and services that our teams provide to Veterans.  Our centers work hard to offer quality and compassionate programs that specifically address the needs of our Veterans and we are proud to be a part of such an exemplary program,” said Paul Stavros, Director of Development for Extendicare.

As a We Honor Veterans community partner, Extendicare is working to ensure that their staff members across the country are prepared to:

  1. Build professional and organizational capacity to provide quality healthcare and rehabilitation services for Veterans and their families.
  2. Develop and/or strengthen partnerships with hospices, VA, Veteran organizations and other healthcare organizations.
  3. Promote hospice and palliative care for Veterans when appropriate.
  4. Demonstrate the impact of organizational programs through evaluation and analysis of programs.

We Honor Veterans was developed in collaboration between NHPCO and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs to improve end-of-life care for all Veterans.
