Rural Veterans

Of the almost 8 million Veterans enrolled in the VA Health Care System, about 3 million live in rural areas.

Rural Veterans do not always live near VA health care services. This is the biggest challenge facing many rural communities. Veterans in rural areas often cannot get to a doctor or health care facility, so rural Veterans often do not get the care and treatment they need. Some rural Veterans need help with scheduling doctor visits, scheduling medical tests and obtaining medication from their local drugstore.

Office of Rural Health

VA is concerned about the special needs of Veterans who live in rural areas, and this is a top priority in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). VA’s Office of Rural Health (ORH) is a part of the Veterans Health Administration and their mission is to improve access and quality of care for enrolled rural and highly rural Veterans by developing evidence-based policies and innovative practices to support the unique needs of enrolled Veterans residing in geographically remote areas.
