NHPCO’s We Honor Veterans Welcomes Genesis HealthCare as New Community Partner

For Immediate Release:
October 30, 2013

Partnership to Enhance Care that Genesis Provides to Veterans

(Alexandria, Va) – It surprises many people to learn that one in four dying Americans is a Veteran. These men and women often carry experiences from their military service that present unique challenges at the end of life. We Honor Veterans, an innovative program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, is helping thousands of professionals across America enhance their skills to meet these needs.

Genesis HealthCare is the first skilled nursing provider to join We Honor Veterans (WHV) as a community partner.  As a community partner, Genesis HealthCare will have access to the innovative resources and training that WHV makes available to the Veterans they are serving throughout the country.

“Genesis HealthCare is committed to providing our nation’s heroes with the care and recognition they deserve,” shares George Hager, Chief Executive Officer of Genesis.  “Our work with We Honor Veterans will enable our staff members to enhance the quality care and services that we provide to the Veterans receiving care in our centers every day.  We are proud to be a part of such an exemplary program.”

Within the WHV program, there are four levels of distinction that each Genesis center can earn based on its involvement with Veteran education and its interaction with the Veterans and their family members that they are caring for. The goal of these levels is to ensure the very best care is being provided to those who have served our country.

“We Honor Veterans was developed in collaboration between NHPCO and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs to improve end-of-life care for all Veterans. Now, through the dedication of community partners like Genesis HealthCare, we are ensuring that Veterans and their families receive the highest quality care possible in a skilled nursing center setting,” said J. Donald Schumacher, NHPCO president and CEO.

As a We Honor Veterans community partner, Genesis HealthCare is working to ensure that their staff members across the country are prepared to:

  1. Build professional and organizational capacity to provide quality services for Veterans and their families.
  2. Develop and/or strengthen partnerships with hospices, VA, Veteran organizations and other healthcare organizations.
  3. Promote hospice and palliative care for Veterans.
  4. Demonstrate the impact of organizational programs through evaluation and analysis of programs.
