WHV Webinar: Dementia Series Part 2: Supporting Caregivers of Veterans with Dementia at End of Life

In this webinar, Nicholas Koufacos, LCSW, ACHP-SW, Dr. Judith Howe, and Eugenia Dorisca, BS integrate findings from their study, Supporting Caregivers of Veterans with Dementia, to provide education on stress reduction techniques for caregivers who care for Veterans with dementia at end-of-life.

Nicholas Koufacos, LCSW, ACHP-SW, is a clinical social worker and the senior education specialist at the VA Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC). He serves as the Dementia Care Coordinator and provides educational programs for VA staff in VISN2 (NY/NJ) and caregivers across the nation.

Judith Howe, PhD, MPA is a professor in the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and associate director/education and evaluation and deputy director, VISN 2 Geriatrics Research, Education and Clinical Center at the Bronx VAMC.

Eugenia Dorisca, BS is project coordinator of the VA Geriatric Scholars Program Virtual Learning Community at the Bronx VA. She has a wealth of experience coordinating geriatric education programs at the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center, in addition to her role as the coordinator of the Consortium of NY Geriatric Education Centers (CNYGEC) and earlier in her career with the Alzheimer’s Association, NYC Chapter.

This webinar discusses:

  • Presentation of method and findings from Supporting Caregivers of Veterans with Dementia (2023)
  • Acknowledgment of the unique focus within hospice care on the patient-caregiver dyad
  • Discussion of the experience of caregivers caring for Veterans with dementia at end of life – including demographics, unique needs, and risk factors
  • Introduction of Whole Health tools and other interventions for use to reduce stress in Veteran caregivers
