State Survey Results

Purpose

National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s We Honor Veterans program, in collaboration with VA’s Hospice and Palliative Care program, offered community-based hospice providers the opportunity to participate in a national online We Honor Veterans state-specific survey to characterize and benchmark the business relationships between community hospices and VA medical centers.

Procedure

NHPCO distributed the state-specific survey web link to each State Hospice Organization who then sent the survey to hospice providers in their state.  The surveys were disseminated in August 2011 and the survey link remained open through December 2011. There were no charges or financial incentives to participate in the survey, either to the state organization or to hospices that responded to it.

Results

A total of 593 community-based hospice providers from 44 states participated in the survey.  Findings (see links below) were compiled into state-specific and a national summary report and disseminated to the State Hospice Organization executives.  The State Hospice Organizations have been encouraged to distribute the results to their respective hospice provider members and their Hospice-Veteran Partnerships, and to share them with their VA contacts.

Applications

The survey data will be used by NHPCO and VA’s Hospice and Palliative Care Program to ensure that our Nation’s Veterans have access to excellent end-of-life care in all settings.

The national and state-specific reports may also be used by local and regional Hospice-Veteran Partnerships to develop tools, resources and educational materials to address barriers to end-of-life care for Veterans.

In addition, hospice providers and VA staff can use the information to help facilitate internal discussions and collaboration between VA and community hospices.

For more information about the survey and results, contact Veterans@nhpco.org.
